Rachel started belly dancing on September 11, 2003 after running across www.joyofbellydancing.com . Unaware of the different style of belly dance available she signed up for the Beginning American Tribal Style class taught by Yasmina through the Mesa Parks and Recreation Center. The first few classes were highly intimidating for her as she had no pervious belly dance experience and most of the other students did. Although it was difficult she was immediately hooked and immersed herself in American Tribal Style. After some time fusion caught her interest and she began creating her own costumes which were inspired by artists such as Rachel Brice. Rachel has always had a strong interest in dance which started at the age of 3. She studied many varieties of dance such as ballet, jazz, tap, baton twirling, and gymnastics. Although these activities were fun, Rachel never felt like she belonged because of her height. Belly dance was one of the first experiences were she felt it didn't matter what she looked like, only how she danced. This realization has been very beneficial to her self esteem, and overall happiness. Hipnotic Hips, which was formed in July of 2005, is her current source of inspiration and passion and an excellent outlet for her creativity. The troupe is made up of 5 friends whose love of dance brought them together. |
